We gave Shadrack's mother, Boamaa Yankor, a small grant earlier this year to help her grow vegetables. She used the money wisely. She planted vegetables and used the last of the money to buy books for her children at school. She was a woman after my own heart.
I love books. I am addicted to books. Books equal knowledge! Books can change your life or at least your outlook on life. Anyway, she grew enough vegetables to supplement her growing family's diet and share with Isaac and his grandmother. She was so pleased that she wanted to see what else she could do to make life better for her family. She asked Isaac if she could possibly borrow a small amount from him for some animals.
Well, Isaac is not a rich person. He told me what she asked and I told him that I was not a rich person either but I would see what I could do to help. I offered to help her get into the chicken egg laying business. It had a relatively low cost to start (well for me, living and working in the U.S.A.)
I used my personal funds, but in the name of HYBASIA because it was in the spirit of helping by brothers and sisters in Africa that I founded it in the first place. All arrangements were made to make this dream come true on a small scale. A microbusiness so to speak. She will be able to sell the eggs to the people in her village.
Well the carpenter built the structure for the chickens. The wood was initially prepared at the saw mill by special order. The veterinary officer made a special trip to the farm of Shadrack's mother to see where the structure was to be built and give the specifications for the structure. Everything is completed. She has finished her ten days of training and received a certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Agriculture , Cape Coast District. Therefore, she can now rear any live stock.
A driver with a truck transported the chickens to the farm. A rooster will help the chickens make more chickens. The business will grow naturally.
Below are a few photos of the farm and the preparations for the chickens.
